JOB DESCRIPTION: This position provides administrative and policy oversight on all the programs at the Maine Geological Survey. This position is the primary spokesperson for the State Government on geological issues. Furthermore, the position exerts significant influence on statewide policy issues of a geological nature, such as policies on groundwater, geologic hazards, climate change impacts, and mineral resources and mining. It does this by participating in high-level policy processes, and by developing briefing papers and testimony for consideration by the Administration and the Legislature. Additionally, the position influences national policy related to geosciences by participating in national groups and interacting with Maine’s Congressional Delegation. The position is responsible for developing and managing the budget, seeking additional funding through grants, and developing collaborative relationships with other agencies and institutions. It is responsible for hiring, supervision, and coaching of Maine Geological Survey personnel. 

Responsibilities include: 

  • Develop proposals to funding sources to augment the resources available for geological investigations.
  • Work with the Bureau Director, DACF management, and other stakeholders to develop sound policies related to geological issues.
  • Provide oversight to Maine Geological Survey staff.
  • Engage with the legislative process, developing and providing testimony.
  • Negotiate research cooperatives and develop relationships with public and private agencies and groups to coordinate activities.
  • Participate in applicable working groups, committees, and other bodies relating to geological resources, groundwater, and geological hazards.
