The Alaska Department of Natural Resources is recruiting for the role of Chief Geologist and Director of the Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys (DGGS).
About the Role
The Director is a key member of the Department’s executive leadership team and is responsible for overseeing a team of 50+ geologists and professional staff. The mission is to characterize the resources and geologic features of the United States’ most vast and geologically complex state.
This position is ideal for a passionate geologist, capable administrator, and dynamic leader who wants to serve Alaska and Alaskans with their expertise.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead Applied Geoscience Programs:
- Guide the development of applied geoscience projects that address high-priority geological information needs.
- Manage the Division’s research, analysis, and information distribution programs.
- Provide strategic advice to the Commissioner of the Department.
- Supervise and Manage Staff:
- Directly oversee division leadership and a full-time staff of:
- Geologists
- Natural resource specialists
- Administrative personnel
- IT professionals
- Supervise a part-time staff of undergraduate and graduate student interns.
- Directly oversee division leadership and a full-time staff of:
- Oversee Operations Across Alaska:
- The position is based in Fairbanks, Alaska, managing staff primarily there.
- Additional facilities located in Anchorage and seasonal field camps statewide.
- Coordinate State and Federal Collaboration:
- Communicate with:
- Department leadership
- Other state divisions and departments
- Federal partners (U.S. Geological Survey, Department of Energy, NOAA, FEMA).
- Advocate for DGGS research priorities to the State Legislature and the Alaska Congressional delegation.
