State Geological Survey:  Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys

Contact Name:  Melanie Werdon

Contact Email:  melanie.werdon@alaska.gov

Job title:  Geophysicist

Overview: The Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS), which is part of the state’s Department of Natural Resources, addresses the state’s needs for applied geophysical surveys and products to promote resource development and address geologic hazard issues. Our geophysical program is expanding due to significantly increased long-term funding from the State of Alaska and the U.S. Geological Survey to regionally evaluate Alaska’s mineral-resource potential. We are seeking a dynamic scientific and operational leader to manage our geophysics program. The ideal candidate will bring airborne-geophysical surveying/contracting experience, a wide variety of professional-level potential-field geophysical knowledge, and project-management skills to develop, oversee, and implement all aspects of multiple complex applied geophysical surveys. The geophysics program manager will write funding proposals, build and maintain collaborations with federal and state agencies, industry, native corporations, and university partners to achieve programmatic goals; serve as the division’s content-area expert for potential-field geophysics; and engage in one or more geophysical surveying projects each year.

If you are inspired by the challenge of leading a multi-disciplinary geophysics program in a vast, geologically complex, and understudied part of the world such as Alaska, and making a significant positive impact on enhancing the understanding of the state’s economic resources and geologic hazards, we encourage you to apply!
