One position will be focused principally on research activities centered around mine waste and tailings place to better document the distribution and quantities of mine waste and tailing sites across Arizona, as well as characterize the metal and critical mineral contents of these sites for potential future reprocessing. The second position will lead a compilation project of geochronologic data across Arizona, sample and characterize critical mineral occurrences throughout the state, and contribute to a synthesis of the mineral resources of Cochise County. There are several other active mineral resource projects in place that exact assignments will depend on the expertise, background, and interest of the successful candidates. Key technical skills for a successful candidate include the ability to conduct geologic mapping of prospects to mining districts, interpret diverse datasets such borehole data, geo/thermochronologic results, and geochemistry, and synthesize information in a GIS environment.
The successful candidate will be a scientist who has strong interpersonal skills, can work collaboratively, and can communicate their science effectively with other researchers, public and private stakeholders, and members of the public to further our understanding of Arizona’s natural resources. AZGS staff scientists are expected to participate in AZGS field investigations, develop and write proposals, and conduct office-based data compilations, that will lead to the production of high-quality datasets, maps, reports, scientific papers, and presentations.
