The Hydrogeologist Specialist, IIHR will contribute to the research mission of IIHR—Hydroscience & Engineering (IIHR) and the Iowa Geological Survey (IGS) by participating in the collection, management, analysis, and publication of data and interpretations, as well as the dissemination of information describing the geologic and groundwater resources of Iowa.

Specific Job Duties and Tasks:
- Perform research and service-related activities in hydrogeology based upon protocols developed by or in conjunction with other research staff or as principal investigator.
- Research literature and perform critical analysis to develop novel approaches to research either independently or in conjunction with others. Adapt and perform protocols from literature. Critically review literature for the purposes of furthering the research and developing new hypotheses in conjunction with other investigators.
- Develop and implement research plans either independently or in conjunction with others. Conduct complex research in the area of hydrogeology and groundwater source modeling. Develop, troubleshoot, and formulate protocols and hypotheses in the field of hydrogeology. Develop procedures and techniques as outlined in research protocol, assure fidelity to protocols, propose modifications to protocols and/or assist in the design of research protocols. Apply new methods/theories.
- Arrange and plan daily activities to prepare for investigation protocols. Develop and implement procedures for monitoring data integrity.
- Identify and adhere to Quality Assurance practices to maintain validity and integrity of hydrogeologic data. Adhere to safety and compliance guidelines. Monitor, test, and evaluate current procedures for collecting, recording and consolidating data.
- Perform statistical analysis of data and qualitative analysis. Collect and track data, perform data analysis for reports and maintain records of methods used. Submit data and specialized information for use in hydrogeology reports, including manuscripts, publications, presentations, and fee-for-service contract opportunities.
- Contribute to the technical writing of papers, manuscripts, grant applications and published materials as evidenced by documented recognition as an author or for technical assistance. Prepare bibliographies and abstracts for publications.
- Make recommendations regarding the validity of research and data.
- Responsible for safety programs by following guidelines and maintaining required documentation.
- Track and monitor reliability and calibration of field equipment to ensure availability for use in water supply and aquifer studies, including pumping tests, in-situ tests, well interference evaluations, and water well performance evaluations. Monitor environmental risks and quality control.
- Test new equipment and troubleshoot and resolve complex equipment failures and repairs.
- Develop and track progress for training on lab and field techniques, safety, and research protocols to assure outcomes are achieved.
- Develop evaluation tools for measuring the outcomes of training, staff development, and staff performance while ensuring compliance with UI policies and procedures.
