The Kentucky Geological Survey traces its roots back to 1838, when the Kentucky legislature appropriated funds for the first government sponsored geological reconnaissance of the commonwealth. A formal geological survey was subsequently established in 1854. Since 1838, only 13 state geologists have overseen the organization. KGS became a non-teaching unit of the University of Kentucky in 1948 by an act of the Kentucky legislature, with a mandate to conduct a continuing study of the geology of Kentucky, and currently operates as a research center under the university’s Vice President for Research. KGS has a 12-member advisory board recommended by the President of the university and appointed by the governor. The board meets twice a year to provide feedback on KGS activities and strategies. KGS has grown to become one of the country’s top state geological surveys.

KGS has a state funded recurring budget of approximately $4M per year that is currently supplemented by more than $2M per year in external research funds. It comprises more than 50 research and support staff in three locations: a main office on the UK campus in central Lexington, the Earth Analysis Research Library on the outskirts of Lexington, and a western Kentucky office in Henderson. The state geologist or a designee is an ex officio member of the Kentucky Board of Registration for Professional Geologists and a permanent member of the Kentucky Geographic Information Advisory Council. Other KGS scientists play prominent roles on state and federal advisory committees and are national leaders in their fields.
