The Department of Earth, Geographic, and Climate Sciences (EGCS) is seeking a motivated and dynamic geoscientist to serve the public and promote geological literacy as the MA State Geologist for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and Director of the Massachusetts Geological Survey (MGS). This calendar year, lecturer position is located on the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus in the Department of Earth, Geographic, and Climate Sciences (EGCS).

The mission of the State Geologist/Director is to perform research on the land, mineral, and water resources of the state; coordinate and facilitate research, communication, and collaboration among various agencies, researchers, and stakeholders; collect, compile, analyze, and preserve data pertaining to the geologic environment; share research with the public through maps, reports, and other publications; and collaborate with federal and other state geological surveys, and academic institutions.

Opportunities exist for collaborations with a diverse set of centers linked directly to EGCS including the Northeast Climate Adaptation Science Center (NE CASC), the School of Earth and Sustainability (SES), and the new Center for Braiding Indigenous Knowledges and Science (CBIKS) The position is authorized under the Massachusetts General Laws (MGL), Chapter 21A, Section 7B.
