The Geologic Mapping and Paleontology Program of the Utah Geological Survey (UGS) is seeking a full time permanent geologic mapper.  This is a unique opportunity to build a career focused on geologic mapping in Utah. This position will be focused on federally funded STATEMAP geologic mapping at multiple scales.  The incumbent will be responsible for the preparation of geologic maps and supporting materials for variety of mapping projects with a focus on the stratigraphy, structure, igneous rocks, and unconsolidated deposits of the Great Basin part of Utah. 

Key responsibilities and day to day responsibilities of this position:

  • Create digital geologic maps, cross sections, correlation diagrams, stratigraphic columns, and supporting materials
  • Perform geologic field work that includes field mapping, collecting structural measurements, collecting samples for geochemistry and geochronology, and measuring stratigraphic sections
  • Prepare digital geologic maps, supporting materials, and reports for review. 
  • Review geologic maps from UGS and external scientists and students.
  • Address various review comments and complete map publications on time for contract deliverables, provide timely reviews of geologic maps in collaboration with other UGS staff and outside geoscientists.
  • Develop geologic expertise for the Great Basin and share this expertise via conferences, publishing, and public interaction.
  • Collaborate with other Utah Geological Survey staff and oversee assigned geologic mapping projects.
