The West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey is seeking to fill two Geologist I positions that will be located in the Oil and Gas Program, although opportunities for other work will exist. Following the interview process, the top two candidates will be selected. The ideal candidate will serve as a geologist at the entry level and will be an independent worker able to complete tasks with limited to moderate supervision and training.

Duties:

Duties will include, but not be limited to, the following tasks:

  • inventory and organization of legacy datasets;
  • scanning and/or digital capture of geophysical log data;
  • description, graphical logging, sampling, cataloguing and organizing, and/or photography of drill core and well cuttings samples;
  • processing of oil & gas well documents, entry of basic data into the Oil and Gas Wells database;
  • compilation and tabulation of data;
  • technical report writing;
  • response to requests for information from the public;
  • and other duties as necessary.



Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a BS degree in Geology from an accredited college or university, with coursework including Sedimentology, Stratigraphy, and Structural Geology.

Experience:

The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of GIS software, as well as proficiency with various Microsoft Office products.

Other:

Travel and field work may be required, and applicants may be required to work outdoors for extended periods of time. The candidate must be physically capable to assist with manual labor, such as moving core boxes, paper records, and other tasks as needed.

  • A valid driver’s license is required, and the applicant must be insurable under the state’s vehicle insurance plan.
  • This is a non-Civil Service, at-will position.
